Village Theatre
Project has joined forces with Indian Hill Music School to
offer a summer 2007 musical theatre workshop and production
of the musical, Fiddler on the Roof that promises
to be the largest venture the theatre’s youth program has
taken to date, according to Village Theatre Project Artistic
Director Troy Siebels. “We’ve had a lot of success
in recent months particularly, with forty-six kids in a great
production of Children
of Eden in February;” recalled
Siebels, “but this summer we’re taking it to the
next level.” Formed in 2004 by Siebels and Co-Artistic
Director Christopher Chew, Village Theatre Project is the Nashoba
Valley’s only professional theatre company; an ensemble
of twenty-three actors, directors and designers performing in
Groton and surrounding towns. The theatre’s Young Company
offers productions, workshops and classes for ages 8-18; taught
and directed by members of the company’s professional ensemble.
Indian Hill
Music, a non-profit regional center for music education and
performance based in Littleton, was founded in 1985 and boasts
a professional orchestra, world-class guest artists, and instruction
in vocal and instrumental music. Indian Hill Music has offered
summer musical theatre programs in the past, and takes a step
forward with this year’s
collaboration with Village Theatre Project.
The six-week
program will focus not only on rehearsals for the musical comedy
classic, “Fiddler on the Roof,” but
also on a wide range of theatrical skills, including voice, stage
movement, audition technique, Commedia dell’Arte, improv,
Shakespeare, stage make-up and more. Workshops will be taught
be members of Village Theatre Project’s Company of Artists,
as well as Indian Hill Music School faculty. Workshops run June
25 through August 5, Monday through Friday 8:30am – 5:30pm.
Aspiring performers ages 8-18 are encouraged to participate;
ages 16-18 may opt for the half-day program, 8:30am – 12:30pm,
focused solely on rehearsal and performance of the musical. Tuition
for the six-week program is $950; or $380 for the half-day program.
“What
sets us apart from other youth theatre programs is the participation
of so many working theatre professionals,” remarked
Siebels, “and working with Indian Hill Music makes that
even more the case.” Professionalism has been the mark
of distinction for the theatre’s youth ensemble; drawing
directors, instructors and others from the theatre’s 23-member
ensemble of Boston and New York based professional theatre artists.
More than fifteen VTP Company and Indian Hill faculty will lead
the program, which will culminate in a production of Fiddler
on the Roof at the Littleton High School auditorium, with
fully realized sets, costumes and stage lighting; and a live
orchestra. VTP Co-Artistic Director Christopher
Chew will co-direct
the production with Company member Shelley Bolman; Laura
D. DeGiacomo will choreograph; Indian Hill’s Susan Bonito will music
direct. Professional set, costume and lighting designers and
stage manager will support the production.
